The ACCC wants internet providers to advertise their upload speeds. 

Working from home makes stable two-way communications more important than ever, and the competition regulator wants more upfront data to help remote workers pick their best internet plan. 

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) is reviewing marketing guidelines for retail service providers (RSPs) that offer fixed line and fixed wireless broadband services.

The review may lead to RSPs having to  clearly state typical upload speeds in their advertising. 

“Currently, most RSPs do not expressly state the upload speeds for their broadband offerings,” the ACCC says. 

“Broadband upload speeds have become more important to consumers’ broadband experience as consumers have engaged in home based work and study more consistently than has historically been the case. 

“Upload speeds are particularly relevant to video conferencing experience and the speed with which large files can be transferred to the workplace and education institution.

“Given these developments, we are considering enhancing the guidance to provide that upload speeds information should be made available to consumers in marketing material.”
