Consumer confidence in Western Australia's economic performance has dropped to its lowest level since the global financial crisis, a recent survey shows.

The Chamber of Commerce/Curtin University survey of Consumer Confidence questioned over 400 people across Western Australia on their sentiments about the state's economy over the coming three months.

The March quarter survey showed that only 34 per cent believed the economic conditions in WA would improve, compared to nearly 40 per cent in the last quarter.

Chamber chief economist John Nicolaou said the biggest drops in confidence were among those in rural areas, middle-income earners and young people.

He said the fall in confidence came even as there were signs of economic improvement for the State.

"The fall occurred despite many households reporting improved finances and job opportunities and a growing confidence about buying property," he said.

Mr Nicolaou said longer term the survey showed West Australians were confident about the State's economic performance.

Almost 66 per cent of respondents - up from 63 per cent - said they expected the economy to be stronger over the coming year.
