The Australian Government is to hold a Tax Forum at Parliament House in Canberra on Tuesday October 4 and Wednesday October 5, to be attended by around 150 representatives of community groups, businesses, unions, and governments, as well as academics and tax practitioners.

The forum will focus on the government’s tax reform agenda which aims to strengthen and broaden the economy, and maximise the opportunities of the mining boom by cutting small business taxes, boosting super and building more regional infrastructure.

It will address issues raised in Australia's Future Tax System (AFTS) Review, released  last year, with sessions to discuss personal tax, transfer payments, business tax, state taxes, environmental and social taxes, and system governance.

The AFTS Review led to the government’s plan for a greater return to the nation from the non-renewable resources sector, as well as measures to simplify tax for small business and individual taxpayers, and reward savings outside of superannuation through a tax discount on interest income.

The government is planning that the Tax Forum will help identify those reforms that have broad agreement across the community. It will be followed by a debate in Parliament. Further details and invitations to the Forum will be released in coming months.
