The WA Local Government Association says it will be looking for the reinstatement of grants for regional infrastructure projects.

Around $20 million from the Country Local Government Fund was taken away from thirty-six councils last year, after the State Government said they had not properly acquitted previous packages.

The decision meant dozens of small towns went without vital repairs, with the Shire of Derby West Kimberley losing about $1 million.

WALGA president Troy Pickard says Regional Development Minister Terry Redman has sent a letter to the affected councils, indicating that the flow of funds may begin again.

Re-expanding the Country Local Government Fund will reportedly form part of upcoming budget deliberations.

“Hopefully his Cabinet colleagues will also see the merit of the state adhering to their existing funding agreement,” Mr Pickard said.

“And ensure at least $20 million is allocated effectively from the 2013 financial year so those projects can be completed.”

“Minister Redman has just written to all those country local governments, advising that he has agreed to honour the funding agreement and the $20 million commitment and he will now include that in the funding deliberations of Cabinet.”
