Director, Business Engagement and Policy

 

With the active participation of 22 member banks in Australia, the Australian Banking Association (ABA) provides analysis, advice and advocacy for the banking industry and contributes to the development of public policy on banking and other financial services.

The ABA works with government, regulators, community groups and other stakeholders to improve public awareness and understanding of the industry’s contribution to the economy and the broader community. The ABA works to ensure Australia’s banking customers continue to benefit from a stable, competitive and accessible banking industry.

The Australian banking industry is playing a key role in the economic recovery and the ABA is a dynamic and innovative organisation that works collaboratively as a whole and in partnership with our member banks.

The role is CBD based reporting to the Executive Director, Policy.

This role is responsible for establishing and maintaining effective strategic relationships with small business and agribusiness stakeholders, including industry associations, government agencies, regulators and government departments. This role will also support the ABA Director, Government Relations to develop strategic relationships with MPs and political stakeholders. 

The role

  • In consultation with the ABA Executive Leadership Team, develop and implement a small business and agri-business stakeholder engagement strategy.
  • Build and maintain influential relationships with external stakeholders, industry associations, government agencies, regulators and government departments.
  • Establish an ABA business stakeholder forum to obtain direct stakeholder feedback on banking issues faced by small business and agri-business and develop action plans to address these issues.     
  • Working with ABA Corporate Affairs, contribute to government relations, media and communications plans, and attend external meetings and industry events.
  • Build and maintain trusted relationships with member banks, particularly liaising with bank representatives and nominated small business and agri-business banking representatives. 
  • Working with member banks and stakeholders, develop policy and advocacy positions in response to issues identified through engagement with business stakeholders and government led reforms, and design industry led policy and reform initiatives.
  • Coordinate the ABA Agribusiness Strategy Group. 
  • Proactively manage policy issues, provide expert problem solving, judgement and execution when faced with complex and urgent issues.
  • Provide advice to the ABA and member banks about areas of risk identified through engagement with business stakeholders. 

Skills & Experience

  • Proven expertise in small business and agribusiness banking issues
  • Experience tailoring information and delivering insights across a wide range of audiences.
  • Proven stakeholder management at senior executive level with a broad range of stakeholders within corporate, political, regulatory or business environments.
