The approval fast-track in NSW appears to be working, with a $2.2 billion redevelopment signed off almost immediately.

Just days after the State Government announced it would fast-track certain assessments to boost the NSW economy and retain jobs during the COVID-19 crisis, it has given the green light to the Ivanhoe Estate at Macquarie Park, including over 3,000 new homes, a primary school and a town plaza.

Construction will begin in October.

City of Ryde Mayor Jerome Laxale said he was “stunned” that it could be approved after only four days of the acceleration program.

“It seems very predetermined,” he said.

“The council has major concerns as to what corners were cut [and] how this was approved so quickly, being a major development.”

Mr Laxale said the council does not believe there is enough public infrastructure to support the number of apartments.

“I think the minister needs to release all documents and all discussion around this,” he said.

The Department of Planning said the project was “shovel ready” and “advanced enough to create jobs and deliver public benefit”.

“It was already under final assessment and could deliver significant economic and social benefits,” a spokesperson said.

“It is important to note that the application has been in the planning system since 2018, undergone three community consultation and exhibition periods and rigorous assessment, and council has been consulted throughout the process.”
