ANZ has announced it is shutting four branches – two in West Australia, one in Queensland and one in New South Wales.

The latest closures follow news earlier this month of five branches shutting, leading many to wonder where it will stop.

“In recent years we have experienced a significant change in the way our customers choose to do their banking,” ANZ said in a recent statement.

“Customers are visiting branches to have conversations about their major life events and are increasingly choosing to use more digital ways of banking, such as goMoney, ANZ Smart ATMs and other digital methods for simple transactions.

“As a result, we have observed a sustained decrease in the number of customers who choose to visit the above branches and we have therefore decided to close them.”

The latest branches to be closed by ANZ are: St Georges Tce Branch/WA, Brighton Branch/WA, Redcliffe Branch/Qld and Grenfell Branch/NSW.

The bank does not cite any quantitative research about the decision, so ANZ workers and their unions cannot know whether other branches are at risk of closure.

The Finance Sector Union believes there will be more closures, and is hoping that insiders will let them know if they think a closure is imminent.

“We know a number of groups in the community, including the elderly and the business sector, value the branches and they are likely to see these closures as a short-sighted decision that will harm the local area,” and FSU statement said this week.

“So let’s put our heads together to see what we can do to save more branches from being axed.

“If you think your branch is at risk, get in touch with us ASAP... you have a right to know if your branch and your job is secure and ANZ has a duty to consult with employees, instead of springing closures on them.”
