While the Federal Government demotes the small business portfolio, Labor’s shadow ministry is keeping it close.

In Malcolm Turnbull’s cabinet reshuffle, the small business portfolio removed from cabinet.

Days later, ACT senator Katy Gallagher was appointed shadow minister for small business, a portfolio will remain in the shadow cabinet.

Gallagher, a former chief minister of the ACT, issued a statement saying she is “honoured” to be given the appointment, describing small business as the “engine room of the Australian economy”.

“Talking to and listening to small businesses, supporting a level playing field for small business, lowering the small business tax rate, addressing access to capital, increasing employment opportunities and ensuring a modern and efficient regulatory environment are all key priorities for me in this new role,” Gallagher said

Labor’s move has been backed by the Council of Small Business Australia.
