Analysts, Assistant Directors and Directors – Climate and Industry Modelling Branch

The Department of the Treasury is building new capability to re-establish Treasury’s role in modelling climate change risks and opportunities for the Australian economy.

The Climate Change and Industry Modelling Branch will support Treasury’s provision of analysis, modelling and policy advice on a range of issues that span climate change mitigation and adaptation, climate change impacts, industry policy and international and trade policy.

We are seeking highly motivated and experienced Analysts, Assistant Directors and Directors to join the new Climate Change and Industry Modelling Branch, which is being established within Treasury’s Macroeconomic Group.

The new Branch will include a Global Macroeconomic Modelling Unit, responsible for providing advice on the impact of international policies and global climate shifts on the Australian economy; a Domestic Modelling Unit, responsible for advice on the impact of domestic climate policies and risks on the Australian economy; and a Domestic Data, Sectoral and Regional Modelling Unit, responsible for providing detailed analysis of policy impacts and working closely with other units to provide complex data inputs.

As an Analyst, Assistant Director or Director, your skills will be needed to:

  • Analyse the direct and indirect effects of major policies and economic shocks on the Australian economy, firms, regions and households.
  • Further develop Treasury’s analytical and modelling frameworks by identifying and developing, in collaboration with others, new modelling and analytical approaches.
  • Work collaboratively across the department and the APS to build Treasury’s capability in climate and industry modelling and analysis.
  • Collaborate with domestic and international policy and research partners and conduct and publish research that furthers the Treasury’s policy agenda.

Treasury is well-known for delivering the Budget which shapes all Australian Government services, however we do much more than that. We cover the waterfront of policy – everything from working with the states and territories on significant public policy matters; forming a view about the global and domestic economic conditions; and shaping the tax, superannuation and financial systems that are fundamental to how our economy functions.

As Australia’s leading economic adviser, Treasury serves the Australian people by helping the Government manage domestic and international opportunities and pressures. We also engage widely across all regions and sectors. In leveraging our presence in Sydney, Melbourne and a newly established Perth office, we work to strengthen the Treasury’s links with the business community, non-government organisations, academia and other policy-focussed institutions and consumers.

Treasury also provides some of the best employment opportunities in the public services, across all sectors and regions including key global markets.
